Paulownia House

The world's first architecture designed and constructed in the Paulownia wood species. The test house includes a series of innovations and will be our research station for continuing studies of material and environmental behaviour related to architecture, design, and engineering for poetic, performative design.

Valet Female

A tribute to master Hans J. Wegner and his iconic PP250 chair. The project is a design and making of a new unique chair for the female, made from Mahogany wood retrieved in a through-away-dumpster. A project to illustrate design evolution and up-cycling processes from trash to an articulated design object. And the simple passion of designing and making with high quality wood materials.

Isometri I

Orthogonal lines intersect to create the spatial frame and seat, forming a chair of simplicity and ease of manufacturing. Made as a rapid response to a missing chair for a New Year's party, the Isometri I chair is made in 8 hours from sketch to dinner, created from reclaimed balcony flooring off-cut wood.

Asymptote II

Developed from the same geometry of Asymptote I, the Asymptote II combines Abies Grandis and Mahogany wood species to create a hybrid material structure, with low-density, fast-growing species combined with high-density, homogenous grain characteristics. The Mahonogy is positioned to increase tensile reinforcement, turning the chair into a force-flow material articulation.

Isometri II

A chair of simplicity, lightness and elegance. Developed through the properties of the Paulownia Elongate x Fortunei wood species, the composition of elements to holistic compositions and the use of simple fabrication methods provide the character of the both classical and experimental chair design. The chair weighs 2100 gr.

Isometri IV

Harvested from the same Danish forest as Isometri III, the Isometri IV chair is based on the lightweight Abies Grandis species. The grain characteristics reveal the growth speed, density, and annual dynamics, with clear articulation of the early and late wood periods of the year.

Asymptote I

A sibling to the Isometri Chair, the Asymptote introduces curvature, while maintaining simplicity of form, making and a focus on using all available material from the raw material logs

Isometri III

Using the same geometry and intersection joints as the Isometri I and II chairs, the Isometri III chair is made of Poplar wood with significant spalting due to fungal degradation of the wood. While the geometric composition of the chair remains simple, the expressive characteristics are pronounced, highlighting the intersections, elements and spatial arrangement.

Asymptote III

Taking the hybridisation of wood species further, while maintaining the same geometry as Asymptote II, the Asymptote III chair explores how the super lightweight wood species Paulownia can be combined with reclaimed Mahogany wood. Instead of using the reinforcement as tensile elements, alone, the high-density wood is applied to increase joint intersections and areas of high tensile stresses.

Hyper

A new hybrid performance boat developed as a skin-on-frame structure using Paulownia wood and Dacron textiles, creating an agile 12 kg vessel for rowing, paddling and kayaking. The boat is developed through a new computational method that allows freedom of design while a range of geometric and hydrodynamic factors are simulated in real-time.

Solo

A handcrafted, designed, computed and build novel single sculler of Pawlounia and Mahagony woods. Developed to explore, identify and illustrate design system and making processes for environmental constructions. See short film of its making at the project page.

Vector

A new hybrid boat type, designed, engineered and built to be stiff, fast, light and with a striking profile, combining articulated curves and sharp edges. The boat is developed through at new patented method of combining lightweight Paulownia wood with a glass fiber that allows high geometric freedom and precision, while reducing material use, manufacturing processes and waste in production.
